How to Start an Online Business as a Christian Mom

Just a heads up — some links on this site may be affiliate links. That means I may earn a small commission if you decide to make a purchase, but don’t worry, it won’t cost you anything extra! I only recommend products I genuinely love and think could be helpful for you. 😊

Hey there, Mama! If you're reading this, I’m guessing you’ve got a heart for your family, a passion for raising your kiddos well (or maybe even homeschooling), and a desire to contribute to your finances—all while keeping faith at the center of it all.

That’s exactly where I was a few years ago. I wanted to help provide for my family, but I wasn’t ready to give up homeschooling or leave my kids. Sound familiar?

The good news is, you can start a business that honors your values and gives you the flexibility you need. Whether you’re selling products, offering services, or diving into the world of affiliate marketing, you’re about to step into an incredible journey.

Today, I’m going to walk you through how to start a faith-based online business that aligns with your God-given talents. Let’s dive in!

1. Align Your Business with Your God-Given Purpose

First things first: You’ve got to get clear on your purpose. We’re all given unique talents and gifts, and I truly believe that our businesses should reflect those. Spend some time praying, journaling, or even talking to your spouse or trusted friends to help you identify your God-given talents and passions. Maybe you’re amazing at crafting, writing, or teaching others. Maybe you’ve been through an experience that can help other moms walking a similar path.

Just this week, I heard a lovely woman talking about how she was creating a business around her anxiety and how she was able to work through it with pray and journaling.

Whatever it is, trust that God will reveal the right path. And don’t worry if you’re not 100% sure right now — part of this journey is about learning and growing as you develop your idea.

If you're not sure where to start, I've created a niche-finding playbook that can help you dig deeper into what you're passionate about and how to use it in a business.

2. Choose the Right Business Model for Your Lifestyle

There are so many ways to run an online business, and the key is to find one that works for your family. Are you homeschooling? Juggling multiple kiddos? Caring for aging parents? (Trust me, I get it!) You need a business model that fits your life, not someone else’s.

Here are a some basic business types for you to think about:

  • Service-based business: Offer freelance services like writing, graphic design, or virtual assistance

  • Product-based business: Sell physical or digital products like printables, crafts, or even courses

  • Affiliate marketing: Promote other people’s products and earn a commission when someone buys through your link

Personally, I started with freelance writing because it allowed me to work in the pockets of time I had between homeschooling. Now that my kids are older, I’ve expanded to creating digital products like planners and journals and promote other peoples’ products as an affiliate. (Anyone else identify with Shiny Object Syndrome?)

I love writing and don’t see myself setting that aside totally, but I want a business that relies less on calls and meetings so I can be available for my parents’ medical appointments.

Want more help? I highly recommend the Roadmap Exclusive and Digital Creators in Christ — two online business development courses that cover all of this and more, guiding you step-by-step through the process of choosing and launching a business model that fits your life. 3. Create a Faith-Focused Business Plan

I know "business plan" sounds intimidating, but don’t worry—it doesn’t have to be complicated. This is just a way to get your thoughts organized and set clear goals. Think of it as a road map to where you want to go.

I’ve always found the process of writing things down, even in a journal or a simple Google doc, can help clarify all the jumbled thoughts in my head.

Here are some basics to include:

  • Mission statement: Why are you starting this business? What’s your "why" beyond just making money? (For me, it’s about creating flexibility for my family and helping other moms do the same.)

  • Target audience: Who are you serving? I’m passionate about helping Christian moms balance family and finances, but you may be interested in helping teens, seniors, dads, teachers, lawyers . . . you name it!

  • Faith integration: How will you keep God at the center of your business? This doesn’t necessarily mean selling Christian products or targeting a Christian audience. It might be how you interact with customers, the way you handle challenges, or the content you share.

4. Build Your Online Presence

No matter how you feel about social media, having an online presence is crucial for any business. But don’t let that overwhelm you. Start small. At first, I thought I needed to be on all the platforms — soooo overwhelming!! I'm not particularly articulate in conversation and I’m super anxious about video. So, I’ve decided to embrace being a writer and an introvert and focus on blogging and Pinterest to get the word out about my business.

  • Website or blog: This can be a simple place for people to learn about you and your business. A blog is perfect if you've got info you want to share with your readers. It’s a great way to build credibility and connect with your audience, but it's not necessary. You could even start with a very simple sales funnel that guides customers through the sales process — no blog posts required.

  • Social media: Choose one platform to focus on. Think about where your skills lie. If you’re visually creative, maybe Pinterest or Instagram are for you. If you’d rather talk, check out YouTube or TikTok. Choose the place where you feel most comfortable and the place where your audience hangs out.

If you’re feeling stuck, both the Roadmap Exclusive and the faith-based Digital Creators in Christ courses cover everything from building a simple website to creating social media strategies that align with your faith. You’ve got this!

5. Market with Integrity and Faith

Marketing can sometimes feel a little icky, right? When I first started getting into digital and affiliate marketing, I nearly turned and ran the other direction. I could see the possibilities, but I couldn’t get past the constant videos where people said, “I’ve made X dollars in X months and you can too!”

I knew there was a better way and I had a lot of words with God about it. When you approach it from a place of service and faith — thinking about how you can actually help people — it can actually feel really good. You’re not just selling products or services—you’re sharing valuable information. Whether you’re offering a solution to a problem, a tool for growth, or even just a little encouragement, your business is a blessing.

Here are a few ways to market with integrity:

  • Share your story: People connect with people, not just products. Be real about your journey and how your faith plays a role.

  • Offer value: Give your audience something helpful, like a freebie or useful tips.

  • Stay true to your faith: Make decisions that reflect your values, even if that means turning down opportunities that don’t align with your beliefs.

6. Balance Faith, Family, and Business

Let’s be real — balancing a business, family life, and faith isn't easy. It takes hard work. There will be days when it feels like too much, and that’s okay. Give yourself grace, Mama.

Here are a few tips I’ve learned along the way:

  • Set boundaries: Create a schedule that works for you, and stick to it. It’s okay to say no to things that don’t fit in with your family priorities.

  • Pray over your business: Ask God to guide you, give you strength, and help you serve others through your business.

  • Remember your why: On tough days, remind yourself why you started this journey in the first place.

Starting a faith-based online business is such an exciting and rewarding journey. You’re not only creating something meaningful, but you’re also honoring the gifts and talents God has given you. It’s going to take work, but with faith, determination, and a little help along the way, you can absolutely do this!
