Just a heads up — some links on this site may be affiliate links. That means I may earn a small commission if you decide to make a purchase, but don’t worry, it won’t cost you anything extra! I only recommend products I genuinely love and think could be helpful for you. 😊
So you think you’re ready to start a business? I’m so excited for you.
Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher. I thought I’d be the super-career mom who did it all, but God had other plans! Once I started having children, He totally changed my heart. I no longer wanted to leave home to help raise other people’s kids. Instead, I wanted to stay home with my family. We became a homeschooling family and did a lot of traveling for several years.
Eventually, it was time to start earning an income again, but I wasn't ready to leave my babies. So, I built a successful freelance writing business (where I niched in technology solutions for businesses and got even more specific by writing primarily case studies). I love writing and continue to do that, but I also create printables and promote digital products to help moms in business — just like you!
Starting an online business is exciting — and daunting! One of the biggest things that holds people back is finding the right business niche. To make it more confusing, there are a couple of different ways to look at your niche. It could be the type of business you decide to launch.
Whether you’re interested in offering services, selling digital or physical products, affiliate marketing, or coaching, the key to success lies in choosing a niche that aligns with your God-given talents, passions, and values. The other main part of the puzzle is figuring out who you want to serve.
Today, I want to share some ideas for reflection. Taking time to consider these will help you find the perfect niche for your online business as a Christian mompreneur. And let me reassure you . . . it doesn't have to be perfectly defined in the beginning. Your skills and abilities may change over time and you may want or need to try several different things before you land on your perfect niche.
1. Understanding Your Calling
As Christian entrepreneurs, it's important to start by understanding what God has called you to do. Sometimes this is clear from the beginning and sometimes it isn’t. Your business can be more than just a source of income; it can be an extension of your faith and purpose. Have you ever felt called by God to do something specific? If so, this step will be easy for you. If not, ask God to reveal his purpose for your business. Then ask yourself how your business can reflect His love and purpose.
This step is foundational, setting the tone for every decision you make moving forward.
2. Identifying Your Passions
The next step is to identify your passions. What do you love to do? What do you feel strongly about? Think about your hobbies, the activities that bring you joy, and the causes close to your heart. Whether it’s crafting, teaching, health and wellness, or helping others, your passions are powerful indicators of where your niche might lie.
For example:
✔️ If you love creating, a digital products business selling printables or designing courses might suit you.
✔️ If working 1:1 with people brings you joy, you might find fulfillment in coaching or service-based work.
3. Recognizing Your Skills and Talents
Now that you have a sense of your passions, it’s time to consider your skills and talents. God has equipped each of us with unique gifts, and understanding what you're naturally good at can help you find a niche that is both rewarding and sustainable.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself:
✔️ What do others come to me for advice about?
✔️ What skills have I developed through employment and life experiences?
Maybe you’re a great writer, which could lead to a freelance writing business. Or maybe you have a knack for organization, making consulting or virtual assistance ideal.
4. Understanding Your Audience
Once you’ve identified your passions and talents, it’s crucial to think about your audience. Who are you hoping to serve with your business? For many of us, the people we can serve most effectively are those who share similar values or experiences.
For example, if you're a homeschooling mom, you might consider creating resources, products, or services that help other homeschooling families. If you’ve overcome challenges in a particular area, like health or personal development, you might share your journey and expertise with others in similar situations.
5. Exploring Potential Business Models
With your calling, passions, and audience in mind, it’s time to explore your potential offering. Will you create physical or digital products to sell? Will you promote other people’s products through affiliate marketing? Will you offer a specialized service? These are just some of the ways you can earn an income online.
What you decide to offer will depend on your skills and experience or what you are willing to learn.
Praying for Guidance
Finding the right niche for your online business is a process of self-discovery, and as a Christian Mom, it’s also something you’ll want to pray about. God is with you every step of the way, and when you invite Him into your business decisions, He will lead you in the right direction.
Take time to reflect and listen to where God is calling you. Sometimes the answer won’t come right away, but trust that He will reveal your path.
By identifying your passions, recognizing your talents, understanding your audience, and exploring different opportunities, you'll be able to build a business that aligns with your values and allows you to serve others.
